I wrote a check for a friend when buying his motorcycle. Paid the full amount. The check he gave me to put into my account for the bike bounced. So, my check bounced. What could happen to me? What kind of trouble could I be in? What options do I have?

  1. Just replace it will a money order or certified check.

  2. You could be in serious trouble, we are talking prison time trouble.  If you do not pay the dealer the amount owed.

I would say you probably got scammed by your "friend".  Why did your "friend" have to give you a check to put in your account to just have you turn around and write a check to buy the bike?  The reason is simple, your "friend" knew his check would bounce.

If you can't pay the money on your own.  The best thing to do is return the bike and work out any damages if there is a loss of value.  If the bike is not in your name get your friend to return it.  If they refuse to it is going to get tough, especially if the bike is in his name.

One of two things will happen.  At worst the dealer/person will file theft charges on you and your friend if the bike is not returned.  You because of the check you wrote, and your friend because that is who the bike is registered to.  At best they will file a civil case for the money.  In turn you have to do the same thing to your "friend".  Either talk to the DA's office about filing charges on him for the bad check or going after him in civil court for damages.
