Okay, I know when a king is getting old and is ready to die, his oldest son reigns in his stead. But, what happens if the king's son dies and their is no other heir possible? no neices, nephews, no wife, no grandchildren. What happens then? does the king get to choose the heir of the throne?

Thanks for your help!

  1. Every country has it's unique rules on succession. Primogeniture is the normal practice in Britain but not in many countries. In Saudi Arabia, any adult male member of the royal family could become king; I think there about 200 eligible currently.

If all other members of the royal family in Britain died before the king (queen), Parliament would select a new monarch, probably from the noble families. The king could adopt an heir but only with the approval of Parliament.

  2. The way it works in England is that every time someone in the royal line is born, they are put on a list, "Next  in line."

The reigning monarch's offspring and their kids, obviously , come first and then the rest of the population are on the list somewhere.

It is not voted on, it is hereditary.

The reigning monarch has no say

  3. He gets to appoint a person who will probably be a knight or a really respectful duke or something but since there are no more kings and queens on the earth except for the queen of england who really is just a figure head, it really doesnt matter

  4. Yes he can choose, but his choice could be challenged by the strongest nobles after the king's death.
