the egg shell mentioned above is only the shell, not the contents of the egg...

  1. It bubbles as it dissolves.  The eggshell is mostly calcium carbonate.  Carbonate compounds react with acids to liberate carbon dioxide gas.

    CaCO3(s) + 2HCl(aq) --> CaCl2(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l)

    Net ionic equation:

    CaCO3(s) + 2H+ --> Ca2+ + CO2(g) + H2O(l)
