What happens when a "Dry-Clean-Only" item gets wet?

Basically it depends on exacly what it is that got wet , I do wash alot of my DRY CLEAN ONLY things in my washing machine on gentle cycle and they still look the same as the did when they were bought , but it depends on what it is ....like i have a goose down comforter ..that says dry clean only  well i wash it all the time  , and  a lamb skin sweater  it gets washed also and it is still ok so  i would liek to know exacly what got wet  that is dry clean only please Thanks
