Gas engine cars doesn't get hot so the gas relies on the spark plugs to light the gas on fire while diesel engines do not have spark plugs because the engines gets hot enough to light the fuel. If diesel fuel ends up in a gas tank by mistake, it is unlikely that the engine will even start. However, if it does start, the car's performance will decline because the engine's timing will be off or could cause engine knocking.
