It's a normal occurrence, the same as a sudden itch. It's a response from your Central Nervous System that spontaneoulsy causes the  

body to twitch or an itch.  Sometimes, at night, the body can feel a sudden body jerk. This occurs because your muscles have fallen asleep before your brain ( head, mind) has fallen asleep. It's a spontaneous reaction that we have no control over.
