  1. Exactly what your question says... the levels decrease and they can approach extinction.

    If you are pertaining to what is the effect of such a thing, well an infinite number of different things can happen depending on what animal is being affected as the environment is interconnected.

    If it's a bird, per say, maybe it eats insects that normally feed on pests that eat crops. So you have an explosion of crop destruction since it's natural predator is extinct.

    Without protective measures, species may well become extinct.
