  1. Film is photosensitive material, meaning that it reacts to light.  When the camera clicks, the shutter (a small aperture that keeps light off the film) opens for a split second to let light in.  The film is exposed to the light given off by the objects in view of the lens, and the image is burned into the film.

The reason that film must be developed in the dark is that, up to a certain point in the process, the film is still sensitive to light.  If it is exposed to light, this light will burn itself into the film (and, having no lens to focus the image, will just turn the image white).

The negatives you receive are the film after it has been processed and safe to view in light.

And if you are using a digital camera, the click is just a sound effect.

  2. A camera click is the shutter opening and closing.

Film is light sensitive- when exposed to light it changes, so it has to be kept in the dark.

A camera exposes a section of the film for a fraction of a second.

The more exposure the film gets, the more washed out the photo will be (film actually works in reverse- the light areas are dark and the dark light, but I wouldn't bother about that).

The camera will adjust the length of time the film is exposed (shutter speed) and the size of the hole that the light gets in through (aperture). The larger the aperture, the shorter the shutter speed need to get the same exposure.

The film must be kept in the dark until it has been developed, otherwise the photos already taken will be ruined by light hitting them.

The developing process fixes the film, so it can be used and handled in the light (it's called a negative at this stage).

Useless fact- camera is an abbreviation of camera obscura, which means dark room.

Before there were cameras, people had discovered that if you get a totally dark room with a tiny hole in one wall, you get an upside down image of what's seen through the pinhole projected on the opposit wall. A camera is just a smaller version of that room, with the film on the back wall & a method of opening and closing the hole.
