What happens when you break a lease?

at an apartment? Me and my ex are both on the lease but he left me and I cannot afford it!!

  1. Be sure to check your lease agreement for the exact repercussions. In general though, you will probably have to pay a fee of approximately 1 and 1/2 months rent. There may be other fees as well, so be sure to check.

    I would recommend discussing your options with your apartment manager. Being up-front and honest about the situation with them may afford you some kind of leniency.


  2. Since you are both on the lease, you are BOTH responsible to make the rent payments.  If you default on the lease, the landlord will probably seek redress in small claims court, and BOTH of you will be named in the suit.  Your BF doesn't get off the hook because he left you.

    Meanwhile, you still live there.  You may as well inform management of the situation and check whether or not they will work with you in this situation.

  3. find something on the lease that shows the land lord may have broken then use it against him then move the lease is no good if his part is vilated  

  4. look for another place that is cheap .Give you landlord notice or look for a roommate

  5. Unless you can get someone to adopt the lease, you will lose the security deposit.  Depending the state you are in, they can also sue you for the rest of the lease monies and advertising costs.
