If it's at the knock out stages do you have extra time then some sort of penalties? Has this ever happened what are they like?

  1. Correct it goes in to extra time - however there is NO penalty kicking, it happened in South Africa's CLUB tournament - the Currie Cup - between the Blue Bulls and the Cheethas - where the scores were equal at the end of the tournament and the organisers decided they would SHARE the CUP -

There was a lot of unhappiness with this decision and ALMOST caused riots in the streets - so they have decided that the team who has the MOST amount of points (points difference, Bonus points etc.) - who end up in a DRAW situation - will win the cup outright..

  2. If it is in the pool stages then it goes down as a draw with each team getting 2 points.

If it's in the knockout stages, it goes to extra time. I've heard two things that happen if it's still tied, it's either a place-kicking competition or a drop-goal competition. I think South Africa in the 2003 world cup were taking conversion as drop goals in case it ever happened.

If it's a place kicking competition, you have to use different players for each kick, similar to a penalty shoot-out.

Not 100% certain but I doubt it would ever happen anyway.

  3. Extra time then kicking at the posts. It nearly happened in the 2003 Final.

  4. The kicks are taken from the point the try or penalty was awarded. The kicker can bring it as far back as they want but no closer. For example if a try is scored in the corner the kicker has to kick in line from the corner but he can take it back to the 22 or further if he wants for his kick.

  5. It's so unlikely to happen that I doubt you'll see it again.

But yes, it does go to penalties.

It goes to points for/against for the whole tournament then if it's still a draw it goes to penalties (sorry - I'm not sure where from on the pitch)

If it's still a draw after that, then it goes to the toss of a coin.

It went to penalties in the U19 World Cup

*I know here is no extra time at U19 level, but at senior level the same would happen after extra time.

    Ireland V England
