I have an apt set up this week to see about getin my wisdom teeth removed. All four of them have been coming in in the past year and its to the point now where my gumline is swollen completely on one side and throbs n pain. This has been going on for about a week now and finally I decided I'd buckle down and get to the oral sergeon. I have no idea what to expect and was just wonderin whats gona happen. Someone told me from my work that they give you sedatives? for a few days then schedule the surgery and that for a week after your swollen, bruised and still in pain? Does anybody know anything that could just give me some peace of mind....I'm insanely nervous! Thanks!

  1. It's normal to be nervous. I was really nervous on the day of my surgery, but felt better once they put me on the laughing gas. I felt relaxed. They first might give you some antibiotics and then put you on anesthesia. You won't remember nothing. They will give you some medicines for the pain. I was swollen for a couple of days and couldn't eat anything until like the fourth day, but soft food. You will feel better in a week and be able to eat other stuff other than soft food. Don't worry it's nothing to be scared about.

  2. Hi there! I work at a dental office, so let me try to give you a little peace! :) I have had my wisdom teeth out too, so I'll give it to you from both points of view. I can tell you that you are probably suffering more now than you will be after your surgery. Typically when you have your wisdom teeth removed, they will give you the option of being put to sleep. I highly recommend this. You will just go to sleep and they'll wake you up when it's over. If you stay awake, you may hear unpleasant sounds and see things that may make you uncomfortable. If you do choose to remain awake, I would highly recommend an ipod or headphones. It is an incredibly routine procedure (almost everyone has to have them out) and everyone I know was happy they had it done. (including me!) You will probably have some discomfort afterwards. The Dr will usually prescribe decent pain medication for the first few days. You may also experience swelling, but this is different for everyone, as is the bruising. I had four full bony impactions, which is about as bad as it gets, and I was in pain at first, but no swelling, and I ate Arby's two days later. You will be absolutely fine! Even if it hurts for two weeks, it can't be any worse than if you let it go the way it is! You'll do fine. Pop me a message after you're done. I'd love to know how you did! Good Luck!!!!

  3. Just relax and don't stress out about it. It's nothing to worry about. I really hate dental work, so getting a surgery in my mouth was no fun for me to think about either. But I just had four of my wisdom teeth removed two weeks ago and I can tell you that it is not worth worrying about.

They will give you a gas mask for oxygen and they also say they will give you some laughing gas. Most of the time, the laughing gas will make you feel a bit light-headed and relaxed so you won't even notice if they put the IV in you. For me, the laughing gas has no effect on me so I was completely conscious for the IV. The surgeon put a rubber band around my arm so they could see the veins more clearly and it was a tiny pinch and the IV was injected. It feels just like a small shot. You will fall asleep in literally less than half a minute so you won't even get much of a chance to see anything. The actual operation takes about 5-6 minutes per tooth. And after they are finished, it will usually take you about 10 minutes to wake up. But the whole thing really only feels like a minute.

As long as you use general anesthesia, and take your painkillers on a tight schedule, and follow your doctor's instructions on post-operative care, you will be fine. I never had any pain with the surgery, and no swelling. So, don't worry about it. Your stressing out is actually the hardest part of the procedure. That's what will make you most uncomfortable. But trust me, once you get into that chair and they put you on the IV, you won't even get a chance to worry about it. You will fall asleep and a minute later, you're done and out of there. Really.

Good luck with your surgery and hope you have a fast recovery =)
