What happens when you no longer have space in your passport for stamps, visas, etc...?

I have a passport from the United States and I wonder what the procedures are when you run out of space in your passport for stamps. Does the government issue a new one? Do different governments handle this situation differently?

The US can add some extra pages to your passport at no extra cost. Up to 3 sets of extra pages can be added if your passport is in good condition.

After 3 extra sets, you must renew your passport.

Other governments have different procedures: the UK for example does not allow you to add pages, but gives you the option to purchase a 48 page passport instead of the normal 32 page passport. Once its full, you must renew it.

You would have to send in your passport to add in more empty pages. I believe it is free.

If you need additional pages added and your passport is still valid then you can fill out Form DS-4085, Application for Additional Visa Pages.

There is no charge for this unless you request the expedited service.
