Question:

What happens when you run a lawnmower requiring a gas/oil mix, with gas only?

I don't know if it is supposed to be run with the oil/gas mixture in the fuel. It has a different place where oil goes in. So on the flip side what if I ran it with oil/gas and it is a straight gas model? Is there any way to check what kind it is? It does not say anywhere on it. It is pretty old and so far it looks like maybe it is gas only but it isn't running properly.

  1. The same thing happens when you run your car with no oil in it.

A 2 stroke engine uses the oil in the gas to lubricate it. No lube and is locks up.

    Sorry!

  2. that is a no brainer the eingine locks up

  3. The oil is the lubricant for the cylinders.  They will overheat and warp.  It will ruin the engine.

  4. If it has a separate place to put oil it is likely a Honda, Briggs and Stratton, or Tecumseh and they all burn straight gas.  If you pour in a mixture they will just smoke, run a little rough and be harder to start.  If you run an engine that requires a mix on straight gas, it won't run for very long, properly or improperly.

  5. You will burn up the engine. That's where it gets it's oil from.....when you mix it in the gas. It's like driving a car without oil!

  6. thats where it gets its oil from so it need 2 stroke oil

    without oil = engine seize

  7. if it has a "different place where the oil goes in", then it's very most likely and almost certainly a 4-cycle engine that runs on regular gas, with the oil seperately lubricating the engine internals. most all lawnmowers are. all that i've ever seen. if you run a 2-cycle engine requiring oil/gas mix, with gas only, it will lock up the engine in short order. the flip side, run oil/gas mix in a 4-stroke, it will foul the plug, clog the carburetor, smoke alot, and probably stop running until cleaned and corrected, but no lasting damage. what make and model is it? is it a push mower?

  8. It will run until it seizes.  After that buy a new lawnmower.  I would say it is 4 cycle.  Not many lawnmowers are 2 cycle which are the ones that use the fuel oil mix.
