You're playing 9 ball. The 9 is the only ball left on the table. You shoot for it and the cue ball either sinks or leaves the table.

Is that a loss?

  1. it isn't a loss until the other player pots the 9 and leaves the cue ball on the table, in other words if you sink the cue on the 9 the other player has ball in hand and if he isn't blind you'll probably lose

  2. SEWER  BLIMEY the other player has ball in hand on the 9 be ready to laugh if he misses it

  3. It's not a loss, however your opponent will end up with cue ball in hand, so they'd have to be pretty awful to miss that shot.  Here's the appropriate rule from the BCA website.

    -------

    5.7    FOULS

When a player commits a foul, he must relinquish his run at the table and no balls pocketed on the foul shot are re-spotted (exception: if a pocketed ball is the 9-ball, it is re-spotted). The incoming player is awarded ball in hand; prior to his first shot he may place the cue ball anywhere on the table. If a player commits several fouls on one shot, they are counted as only one foul.
