  1. You should get him a female.

  2. Your male betta will prepare a bubble next before being exposed to the hormones of a female, quite often. Generally while people breed bettas, they will do 1 of 2 things. First they'd put the female in its own tank, or, they would put a divider between the 2 fish so that the females hormones will stimulate the males s*x drive, while leaving her in a safe place from the violent male.

This in mind, when your betta builds its bubble nest, its your bettas way of saying "Ok, I'm ready". It will happen with or without a female.

This anomaly can be identified across several species of fish, Bettas are a very good example of this, since they're a solitary species. However, even in community fish, such as the well known Yellow Lab (Labidochromus caeruleus), females will often release a clutch of eggs, and although they are not fertilized, still mouthbrood the "dead eggs". Every 6 weeks as their reproductive cycle turns its revolutions.

In a nut shell, the fact your betta has produced a bubble nest says only 1 thing if there is no female around.

    Keep up the good work.
