  1. The Phantom drops it. It is a chandelier at the opera house. In the play, he drops it after the song all i ask of you, which is a romance song between raoul and christine that he overhears. he is very upset by it because he loves christine and has given her singing lessons and now he thinks she has betrayed him. it is sort of a final warning to her. in the 2004 movie he drops it at the end when he sneaks onto the stage in place of the now murdered tenor piangi to sing a duet with christine. when he reveals that he is the phantom and asks her to marry him onstage she rips off his mask and the audiance sees his face. he is furious and cuts the rope holding the chandelier and then kidnaps christine. the chandelier falls to the ground and starts a huge fire.

  2. It also ascends into the ceiling above the audience in scene 1, effectively making the audience seem present in the Paris Opera House

  3. During the Broadway show and the movie, the auctioneer in the very beginning plugs it in and it rises above the audience.

Later in the show, right before the end of the first act and intermission, the Phantom drops it during the bows of the opera "Il Muto".

It's so awesome to watch it rise and fall, especially if you have really good seats in the orchestra section...it flies right over you! It's not scary or frightening at all, just exhilirating!

  4. it rises in the beginning during the overture, and the phantom drops it during the show,
