What has been Puerto Rico's leading crop since the 18th century?

This is a question for my Spanish Class Culture Trivia. If you know the answer and have a source please give it to me, so I know that the answer is legit. I need the answer at the latest by tomorrow night. Thanks for helping me!

    My last visit to Puerto Rico, was a pleasant experience.

    I was told by a native this scenario.

    When the US initiated the minimum wage, those who worked in hotels, bars, and restaurants received the same min. wage as those who worked in the hot fields.

    You can easily see what happened.  Who would want to work in the heat for the same wages as those in AC.

    I was told that they used to raise all their crops.  Very few crops are now grown.

    The US pays unemployment and welfare to those out of work.

    US ships loads of canned veg and fruit to Puerto Rico.

    I saw lots of alcoholisim in San Juan.
