  1. Maybe you could try looking at Nobel prizes during that time? Just a quick glance at the last few years shows that in 2003 the prize was for "discoveries concerning magnetic resonance imaging" - that's pretty major. My personal favourite is 1997's "discovery of Prions - a new biological principle of infection"


  2. depends on what you mean by breakthrough.  i think people studying regenerative science have made a lot of breakthroughs. also think the human genome project is pretty epic. that list looks like it's mostly about mechanical type stuff.
