Friendly people? Easy to get around? Should we plan hotels stay ahead of time? We're planning on starting in Naples and working our way up through Rome, Florence, Venice and Salzburg..

  1. well it depends where you go if you go to somewhere like Rome you are more likely to find friendlier people. when driving in Italy you take your own life in your own hands!! so be EXTRA EXTRA carefull especially on the autostrada.. i would book if i was you because the italians can get really snotty with you.. a part from that you should be okay... and a really beautiful place to visit in the north is Portofino.. thats where the Rooneys just got married another beautiful place to visit is the Cinque terre all of them are on the Italian Riviera

    and so...

    buon viaggio!!

    ciao

  2. The autostradas and big roads are fine to drive on.  Just drive with the flow of traffic and note that Italians are SERIOUS about driving in the right lane.  The left lane is only for passing- do not cruise along in the left lane.

I would not, under any circumstances ever drive a car in Naples.  Take one ride in a taxi there and I think you will turn over the key to the rental company immediately.  I sometimes have to drive to Florence from where I am and it is a nightmare (though child's play in comparison to Naples) I absolutely hate it.  I take the train there for most everything, only driving a car if I absolutely must.  Same thing for Rome.

As others have advised I think you will be just fine if you avoid driving in the big cities.  I can't speak for Naples or Rome, but in Florence the train station is conveniently located- everything you want to see is within walking distance from the main train station.  In rome and Naples I always hire a driver just because the places I go are spread out throughout the city, but the bus system in Rome is also pretty convenient.

  3. I have spent many holidays driving around Italy. A great experience and you will get used to the Italian driving style quite quickly. And try to avoid the congested centers of the big cities like Rome, Naples and Milan - you are better off, leaving the car somewhere outside and take public transport to the center.

For a great experience of the Italian way of life drive on the smaller regional roads. I had especially great experiences in Le March, Umbria, Trentino and of course Tuscany - but also the Costa Amalfitana is increadible ... or if you are up for nice beaches, go to Sardinia and explore the country there. With a car you can still find some secluded beaches.

If you are not going in August, you can easily risk to drive without planning and get a hotel when you arrive at a place. Just book the big tourist places like Venice, Rome, Assisi, and the like in advance...

You are going to love it!
