  1. Georgia was attacked by Russia for being pro-US, not for entering South Ossetia. South Ossetia was an excuse.

The US wanted to protect it's ally, but couldn't. The US looks weak.

Georgia is seen as the victim because the Russian counter-attack was so strong. The Russians not only entered the disputed territory of South Ossetia, they entered undisputed parts of Georgia. Georgia is also seen as the victim because the US media is supporting the US government.

South Ossetia is recognized by the vast majority of the world (including Russia) as a part of Georgia. The South Ossetians, however, believe they are an independant country. Whether or not they are depends on your opinion.

  2. Georgia is not a victim but they are the true owners of South Ossetia. After the fall of the USSR these countries gained independence. South Ossetia belonged to Georgia before they both were forced into the U.S.S.R in the early1900's. They want it back but Russia has oil interest and the loyalest do not want nothing but Russian rule and what were the Russians doing there anyway?

  3. Georgia was invaded by the Soviet Union back in 1922, losing its independence. When the Soviet Union collapsed back in the early 1990's they became a country again, but the southern part of Ossetia still had strong ties to Russia. The South Ossetian's began launching small scale attacks on Georgia in attempting to break away, so the Georgian Army naturally suppressed them a couple weeks ago. Remember that countries take succession by any state very serious. Look at the United States Civil war and compare it to the current Georgia situation on why Georgia had every legitimate right to attack South Ossetia. Russia on the other had absolutely no right to invade another nation.

I feel that there is much more to this than simple succession though. Russian cannot stand a growing democratic country with strong ties to the United States along its border. Also, Russia has a complete monopoly on direct pipeline shipments of natural gas and oil to Western Europe. British Petroleum and Chevron have financed an independant pipeline running through Georgia into Turkey.

Finally, the United States has been trying to get Poland to agree to a ballistic missile defense system based on its soil. Days after Russia invaded Georgia they signed an aggreement allowing the contruction of the missle defense site. I wonder if the US told Georgia to go ahead an attack South Ossetia, knowing Russia would respond, which in turn would encourage Poland to sign the missile defense deal.

Just my 2 cents ~ Jeff

  4. You can not invade what is yours.  SO is part of Georgia.  Sort of like we have the Florida Keys.  Georgia is our ally, therefore we help our allies when trouble times come.

  5. First, Georgia never invaded Russia, they sent troops to South Ossetia which is IN Georgia. It has yet to be determined exactly what the true circumstances were for Russia invading Georgia, but Russia didn't even attempt to negotiate or seek a legitimate avenue.  If attrocities were occurring in Georgia, why didn't Russia let the world know?  How were they so quick to invade?  Why did Russia go so far into Georgia?  They went well beyond South Ossetia, their excuse for being there.  Russia has been baiting Georgia in order to have a flimsy excuse to invade.  Georgia didn't violate a single UN resolution while Russia didn't have a UN mandate allowing them to be in Georgia.

Secondly, the US considers the free nation of Georgia an ally as does Western Europe (also US allies) and allies defend each other, that's why it's an alliance.  Georgia is also a major hub for oil traveling to Western Europe so what happens in the country can have a very large impact on a lot of the West.

Jeff's answer (above mine) is clearly the best response to your question.

  6. South Ossetia is part of Georgia trying to break away, Georgians tried to stop the succession, then they were completely overwhelmed by a Russian invasion.

Georgia is an ally of the United States.

  7. Georgia is our ally.  South Ossetia in a province of Georgia, so they did not "invade".  That's all.

  8. Because thus far Russia has been shown as this big-bad bully. I actually believed this until reading an article about it that laid out what was really happening. It seems like we've been getting a particularly biased view, without anyone to really sort it out.

It's a lot messier than people want to get into so instead they paint this picture of Russia as the crazy commies and Georgia as the innocent bystander.

  9. Lol i love american misinformation to help themselves.

Georgia can take back South Ossetia cause they are theirs?

Hum so why opposing serbia taking back Kosovo and Iraq taking back Kuweit. the victim is the one allied to Usa?

The most funny is that Ossetia and georgia aren't the same country at all and pretty hate themselves and in permanent war since middle age and thats why their population never passed 100 000 people.

Ossetia resist Mongolians (XIII century) and not georgia and since that time only  Russia suceed to part them together in 1801. And since that date they never stop their ethnic wars with some great battles in 1921 and finally another civil genocide in 1992 during South Ossetia independence.

Since 1992 only 70 000 ossetians(85% Russian origins) are left in south ossetia cause most flew to North ossetia in Russia or georgia.

What South Ossetia want? getting reunification with North Ossetia and not losing their actual independence from georgia. They have their proper army and government already and they get help from alkhabasians and Tchetchenians milicia against Georgia

Oil pipelines and 1 billion dollar in a year spend by usa in georgia  army have just put fire on a situation were blood bath was on way. Georgia get back to nationalism in 2004 and since end 2006 spies and armies moves from the 2 sides never stopped

Usa ll never go there and help Georgia cause Europeans populations except Polland support Russia and applause Putin. Yes i know thats hard to understand but its harder to disenform them, they know history of this regions and they have way more contacts with inhabitants overthere

georgia is the invader but South Ossetia ll never play the victims. They just hate them pretty hard and are happy to get allowed to fight them. They aren't really with Russia cause they want them to let North Ossetia reunificate but they ll use Russia to get their way against georgia.

Next step ll be Albhakazians that also despite georgians and  use the opportunity to make their move

  10. Russian vs American propaganda...Been that way since the Cold War.When was the last time American media said ANYTHING in favor of Russia? or vice versa? Not to mention America wants to keep Georgia as its sattelite nation in the East to "keep an eye" on things.
