they were extensively used in Holland by the MILLERS and also in spain to grind grains like wheat and corn ,for bread ,because there is a lot of wind in both these countries,

the whole turret of the tower could swivvel and be placed in the most favourable position to catch the wind ,and the sails could be ajusted like the sails on a boat ,if there was too much wind they could reef the sails (make the smaller)

today the ones that are left have been turned into tourist atractions ,restaurants and some homes .

to say electricity is rediculous ,there was no electricity in the 15th century

Water mills were used also to grind wheat into flour ,which is a big water wheel that turns by the force of a canal that was connected to a stream or an outlet of a dam.

Wind power is also used to pump water in many countries in isolated places in the USA,Australie ;South Africa ,and i supose everywhere else.

these are not windmils .they are wind pumps that pump water via drive shafts
