In a few months I'm planning on moving into my 1st apartment.

Tell me what are the things that I should look for in a "good" apartment. i.e contracts, upstairs or downstairs etc. Keep in mind I will be attending college and working full time. So I will be on a budget.

  1. Research your apartment complex and the landlord first.  If you know anyone who lives in that area ask them how they like and what to expect.  Make sure you get your rent paid on time, every time.

Make sure you're HAPPY with the place before you sign a lease.  Once you're in it may be hard to get the landlord to fix things in the place.  Make a LIST of all the things that you feel should be corrected before you move in as that is their responsibility.  This includes old, nasty linoleum, carpet, and other stuff like that.

Check out the neighbors.  If they don't fit the description of someone you'd like to live around then don't move.  You WILL have to put up with them.

Make sure the place has things you really want/need, such as washer/dryer hook up (some don't) and a dish washing machine.  Mine doesn't have a dish washing machine, but no big deal to me.

Basically, give the place a once, twice, and third time look over before you step into anything.

Oh, and make DOUBLY sure you are VERY comfortable with the rent.  You'll be stuck paying it.

  2. elevators are soooo nice when moving or bringing in groceries.....the view is very important....you don't want to live to close to an airport...that is just to noisy....laundry room and dish washer are a must....but, check to see what kind of clientele live there and if it is in a heavy crime  area.....
