  1. ~~My husband and son have had United Healthcare for about 5 years now and they have been very pleased. They are covered under our business we own and the coverage has been very good, as well as the rates (for nowadays) is very reasonable. We purchased their insurance through the Costco Insurance for small business and it's a lifesaver! I'm disabled so I have Secure Horizons, again I've never had any trouble with them and have been with them for about 8 years.~~

  2. I also have United Healthcare. But understand, that most companies have different insurance plans, so one person can have a great plan with the company (as I do) while someone else can have a limited, restrictive plan.

I got my plan through my job. I'm on COBRA now. My plan is very good, meaning I don't have to get pre-approval or referrals for anything at all. I had a variety of unexpected health problems about a year ago and had tons of tests and some expensive medicines. The insurance covered it.

The worst thing about UHC is trying to talk to them on the phone. They have a really nasty automated answering system that makes you go through half a dozen menus, input a ton of personal "verification" info and account info before you ever get to a person, and half the time when you do, the person either doesn't know or disconnect you.

I would strongly advise paying a little more to get a POS plan rather than an HMO or PMO. Managed care means the insurance company decides whether you get the tests and care you need, and it takes a lot longer when you have to go through a primary doctor every time you need a referral, then a review before you can get the MRI, surgery, physical therapy, whatever. Doctors won't even tell you about certain care options if they know your plan won't cover them, so you may lose out on the most effective treatment.
