We are definitely keeping Vonage. I know that, to have Verizon internet, you must have Verizon phone service. So if we have Vonage phone, we cannot have Verizon internet.

So my question is: what is the cheapest HIGH SPEED INTERNET that will work with Vonage as the phone service?

  1. Actually NO internet service will provide dependable voice quality transmissions.  Contrary to what many want to believe and many voice carriers who use the Internet for transport suggest, the Internet is not designed to and will not provide priority to voice packets over other packets.  This means that you cannot assure transport of voice packets in the proper order within the required 125 msec time requirement and this will result in voice quality degradation due to both jitter and packet loss.  No carrier will provide the priority needed for any priority coded packets.

At some point all internet traffic is general packets and the ISP is not critical.  A G.711 codex duplex transmission will need up to 175 Kbps per transmission which is small for even DSL transmission.  However, other traffic competes for the bandwidth and packets will stack up during busy times.  As packets stack up, packet delay and packet loss occurs and voice quality degrades or becomes unacceptable.

While Vonage and its direct competitors suggest the problem is an undersized internet feed or inferior LAN hardware, this is seldomly the whole limitation in voice quality.

I know you want to believe Vonage is dependable, error free, and cheap.  It and all of their direct competitors cannot be described by these adjectives.

Finally, because you will not likely wish to believe me, the cheapest high speed internet that will work with Vonage is most likely DSL, but this depends upon your wire distance to the phone company provided DSLAM.  To have DSL you usually also need a voice line.  The next most likely source is the Cable TV internet service.

However, there is no assurance of voice quality.

  2. It is true that you need a high speed internet connection for any internet phone. However, not all high speed internet connections will work with the phones. If the internet is not fast enough, the phone will not work and the internet will have limited connectivity. Vonage should tell you what speed of internet you need.

It is likely that you will have to spend over $30 per month for a fast enough internet. Using a $20 per month internet service from Grande was not fast enough to operate a Lingo phone (also a VOIP internet phone company). The phone would stop working for no reason and the modem would need to be reset every other day.
