  1. Check the score card....... Each hole has a Handicap #   The lower the handicap # the harder the hole.


  2. generally, the par three's are supposed to be easiest, and the par 5's the hardest. but, there is some course variation. i have heard of some courses making par 5's into par 4's for more of a challenge, or moving the starting point closer/back.

  3. Difficult and easy have to be determined for both the front nine as well as the back. Depending on which nine has the more difficult scoring holes that nine received the odd numbers.  Conversely , the other nine receives the even numbers.This is usually determined by the average scoring of the membership. Another wrinkle is not to make the last hole of the even numbered nine the hardest handicap hole.  because too many matches in match play are ended before the stroke can be used.

  4. Depending on the course, generally the way to find out is to see what the stroke average is per hole. Any hole with a stroke average over par is going to be more difficult than a hole with the stroke average under par.
