What holes i a 3 speed fan switch do the 5 colored wires go into.?

my 3 speed fan switch had2 yellow2 black 1 gray 1orange 1 purple coming out of it.it would not work so i took it down and the wires fell out of it.i bought a new switch ,put know i dont know which holes to put the wires in

Read carefully the instructions of the new switch pamphlet or box, if it is not available do the following :

1-Connect the black wire to the main point(hole) 1st, on the left

2-Check the voltage (by voltmeter or multy tester ) @ the other holes against neutral , the higher voltage will provide the higher speed

3- Apply power to every color and observe its speed , then mark the wires as high , medium and low

4- connect the low speed wires to lowest voltage and so on

BUT I ADVISE YOU IF YOU HAVEN'T ENOUGH EXPERIENCE FOR ELECTRIC WORK TO CALL AN ELECTRICIAN TO DO THE JOB SAFELY

i am not really sure on the color codes,but you can go to the web site for the mfg.of the fan and bet you can find it there i do know that the gray,orange,&purple are the speeds i think the black is the line power yellow i'm not sure of,sorry i couldn't be more help
