I have a dog and the carpet is now starting to smell of dog. Anyone know what hoover/vacuum cleaner is best that will wash the carpet and make it smell nice again but will also suck up dogs hair, dust etc?

Thank you in advance!

  1. I would get a professional carpet cleaner in to do the floors. Get it chemically cleaned rather than moisture/shampoo cleaned. If you have underlay, the underlay will absorb moisture and start to smell with a moisture based clean. Professionally cleaned will keep your carpet in good condition for longer.

For the dog hairs I would reccomend a Henry. I supply and fit carpets,  my henry comes in handy. And when I've fitted a carpet, the henry picks up the left over bits of carpet, nails, fluff e.t.c. Go to curry's and see what they use to hoover their floors(a Henry), costs a little over £100, but worth every penny

    Hope this helps

  2. I would just hire a professional to clean the carpet. After that the Dyson Animal is one of the best vacuums I have used for pet hair. They are expensive but well worth it. Sprinkle some baking soda on the carpet and let it sit about 10 minutes before you vacuum each time. It will neutralize the odors.

  3. Depends on how bad the carpet is. If it's really bad, throw it away and get some new carpet. Or cut the bad area out if you're good at patching carpet. :(

Take your dog to the groomers more often, or brush the dog daily with a hair renewer (rubber that removes dead hair). But your dog a dog bed, or place they can sit during the day.

Nature's Miracle is a good product, use it in a spray bottle and follow their instructions, but like I said, if it's localized - this is a good idea, otherwise just pull it all up and lay some new carpet down.

A vacuum brand that works wonderfully is Dyson. Not only do you not have to buy any bags, cleaning it out is a snap.

***Note - No, I'm not an employee for Dyson ***

  4. Hi Daniel,

I had the same problem. I also have a carpet shampoo machine which was a good investment however, the way that a shampoo machine works it doesn't pick up dog hair. You can get specialised vaccum cleaners for dog hair.

Any dog hair on the furniture can be got rid of with a slicker dog brush.

  5. We use a really stiff brush on the stairs which seem to get the worst then a hand held dirt devil which has a rotating brush on the attachement to pick it up and they come up really well much cheaper than buying a Dyson with the attachments and much lighter.  We also use an insecticide occasionally to keep fleas away, these freshen the carpets up but keep your pets  well away from the carpet for a few hours after you've done this.

Anthea Turner recommended using a wet rubber glove on BBC3 which worked when I tried it but took ages and i felt stupid doing it.

We've got laminate flooring and tiling all down stairs as it's a quick brush and mop job daily for the pet hair - much easier.
