The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is loosely based off of serial killer Ed Gein as is the Silence of the Lambs. Others include The Amityville Horror, The Entity, The Exorcist and Open Water.

this is weird, i know, but my grandma knows the little boy [now grown] that the exorcist happened to and my dad knows that lady that played the girl in the movie "the exorcist"

I know that the "Exorcism of Emily Rose" is based on a true event.  As soon as I saw the movie, I looked it up on the wonderful world wide web...

It's a common misperception that "The Amityville Horror" and "Blair Witch Project" are based on true events. "Amityville" has since been revealed to be a hoax, although at the time the film and book came out, it was widely believed that the events depicted therein were pretty much true.

How about "Dracula"? Although the fictional character bears very little resemblance to the historical character, there was of course a real Vlad Tepes.

"The Exorcist" was inspired by the case of a young American who was supposed to have been possessed in 1949, though the movie details were changed considerably from the original case.

There's a recent film called "An American Haunting", based around the Bell Witch.

And of course there's "The Mothman Prophecies", which is also said to have been inspired by true events.

Blair witch and Amityville horror are both fake, wishful-thinking Hollywood money makers; Exorcist is similar, but closer to true; Texas Chainsaw is loosely based on real events, as is Silence of the Lambs and its sequels. None of them are documentaries. I enjoy a good 'horror show', but I don't like to be conned.
