I'm 13 getting my first horse soon, which horse looks better? I want an older horse, for Western Pleasure and just plain having fun. I want to do a lot of different things with it, like Trail riding and bareback and games

  1. I'd say the 1st horse- DAKOTA- looks like a great little mare. She looks put together pretty good with very few flaws. She looks like she would be a joy to ride. I think at her age and with her conformation she has many more years left on her to give you great lessons and more riding experience.

The second horse's legs trouble me. He has a weak topline that tell me he's hard to collect and not as supple a ride. He also appears to be back at the knee.

The third horse's body does not match up at all. She has a long body on short legs. She has a cute face, but she looks spare parts and as if she would make an uncomfortable mount for what you are wanting her for. She in my opinion would be the perfect 1st horse for a young kid who wants something to be ponied along side ma and pa's horse.

I liked Tempo at first. But he seems to straight in the leg in my opinion. He might be better suited for a beginner who isn't wanting to go to fast or push to much.

Your last horse looks nice, but it is kind of hard to tell if they are covering up a sway back right there because they took one picture of the horse's front and then clearly took another picture of the horse from the side while on a slope. She is long in the back so this too can give that appearance. I'd have to see this horse in person to judge.

Overall. They are all nice. But I do think the 1st mare would further your riding and be suitable for your skill level and what you are wanting. Have any and all horse's vetted before purchase as most that you picked out are aging and you need to determine if they will need further health care than you can provide before purchase.

  2. I think the first one would be nice.  The seller says the horse would be happier doing western pleasure.  Always take a test ride on the horse if possible before making a final decision.  Bring another horse wise person with you as a second opinion.  That person might find faults that you will over look.  He has a beautiful color and muscle.  His temperament is 5 but you say you're experienced then you should be fine.  Try to ask the seller if you can see the videos and pictures.  That way you can see how he moves.

  3. The 2nd one - look at the muscle on it.

  4. well i really like the first one. i don't like the second one that much. and i wouldn't care if it is closer to wear you live. just get a good horse. i don't like the third or forth ones. they don't look like they would be good horses but they are a little bit small. because you will out grow them soon if you didn't all ready. and the fifth one just doesn't look like it would be a good horse. i like the first one best i would go with that one. but good luck

  5. okay so you are saying that you want a western pleasure show horse? To place, even at some local shows, you have to have some form of leg up over the others.

I would say that #1 has the better conformation out of all of them for a western pleasure horse. And seems to be well suited by his discription. He also seems level headed which is another good thing that you want for a pleasure horse. I would go out and ride him if I were you, and see what you think.

#2 is an okay horse. I see that one as more of a trail or barrel horse. His conformation is not the best but then again they pictures aren't really too good. Sensitivity can be great in pleasure horses but not too much. Again, I would try him out as well if you don't think #1 is your number one (:

#5 is an older appy mare. She has quite a sway back which is never good in any type of horse. 21 is a little older to make a great show horse because usually around that age they can develop arthritis and other health problems. They also don't say too much about her, which can be a bad thing. $1000 i'm thinking is a little too high priced for her, but maybe she is a great riding horse.

#4 is a draftier built horse. I'm guessing by his conformation that he isn't very flat kneed and that's what you want to look for in a pleasure horse. Draft horses are often more lazier and you defanitly don't want a lazy horse for pleasure. Some people think that but really you want a smart, fast responding horse that is very well athletic. I would say this is a no no horse if you really wanted to go far in showing.

#3 is not what you are looking for. First off she's a pony, looks to me like she won't be flat kneed, was a previous barrel racer, and did some pony club. There isn't anything in there about western pleasure or anything.  I would defanitly not pick this horse, but it's totally up to you.

Hope i could help somewhat (:

  6. I'd say the second or the last look better

  7. In my opinion go with the second one. here's some more. lol shoppings fun isn't it!

    http://www.dreamhorse.com/

  8. I would go for the first or second. I really like the first. I'm just not for the third one and the last two are 21.. let's be truthfull.. they don't have many years left and they will probably start to develop problems soon if not already. My vote is for Dakota.

  9. I would go for the third horse. You sound like beginner so I wouldn't recommend a horse that is "sensitive" or for an intermediate or above rider. The horses that have a temperament of 4-5 or higher are probably going to be pretty "hot" and not as calm and quite as ones that temperament level is a 1-3. A horse that would be most fun for you is probably a been there done that dead broke horse. The fourth horse isn't bad either. He sounds like an nice well broke older horse.

ETA: by "western pleasure" I'm guessing you mean just ride around for pleasure since you also mentioned wanting to do games, trail, and bareback (western pleasure horses do trail ride and ride bareback but don't do games). If you are wanting a western pleasure show horse none of these horses are going to do that well at shows.

  10. I like the first one the best, but the second is nice too - I just  don't like how he is described as sensitive - makes me think spooky. The third is cute, but she has that "pony mare" look to her and I'm thinking she's going to be a little tougher (I'm not basing this on ANYTHING at all, just a gut feeling)

ADD: The last 2 are 21 years old. I know you said you want  older, but that's when problems start turning up more frequently. #4 is a big old chunk for a 14.2 pony and he's very cute, but like I said, getting into his golden years. #5 is a chestnut mare. Need I say more? And her back looks pretty swayed, showing her age and possibly poor posture habits that could result in a sore back.

    Age aside, in order I like #4 the best, then #1, #2, #3, #5

  11. second horse then the third then the first

  12. i like the first and the fourth!

  13. I like the second the best and then the first!

The fourth and fifth seem to old by the time you bond with them and get a good relationship you won't be able to ride them anymore...

  14. I would get a gelding because if you have a mare she will not be so pleasant because they have mood swings. also you need to watch there temper on those paged. look at some of them. also it is not how they look it is about how you feel about them. are you getting what you paid for. etc.

  15. I like the third one myself, Prissy, she looks awesome and much better than any of the others. Plus she is on the smaller side and for you being only 13 she looks the best!

The 4th one has some back issues by looking at the picture.

Im sure you'll find the right one. Good Luck

  16. second horse for sure :) but see what they mean by sesitive!!

best of luckk to you :)

  17. If you are an intermediate rider, Guapo is hands down the better of all of the horses presented here, based on his conformation alone.  He also sounds well trained.

  18. I vote for Prissy, plus they have intimated that they would take less for the mare.  I would offer them $1000 and strike a bargain somewhere in between.  I assume you are from BC, correct?  I won't take the time nor the space to go into why I chose her, but I did.  The others didn't seem to fit your interests or experience level.  And yes, I saw the fourth one too.

  19. Hey  :)

K i am going to tell you what i think of each horse. Good and bad:)

    Horse #1 Dakota

I think she has a very cute face and looks like a sweet heart.

She is older and the comment that said she has alot of miles on her makes me feel like she has been used almost to her full potential and may be alittle run down. also she has a little bit of a fun ny comfermation. when you look at her she has a flat back and not alot of withers and if you in your head pur circles around her front middle and back sections the circles should be the same size. for her she has a big back end and not alot of front.

    Horse #2 Guapo

OMG can you say adorable. she is so cute but older aswell but good confermation. i personally would stay away from the older horses because they usually dont have much more in them.

    Horse #3 Prissy

Even though she is older i feel like she is the besy match so far, she is cute has experience but doesnt look like she has been over worked. Her conformation is good and her coat looks healthy and shiney whichh is good. This says that the risk of her having worms is slim.

    Horse#4  Tempo

Cute but 21 is really old. Thats like 82 in human years and if you look at a regular 82 year old person the dont move like they did. So i personily would pass on this one even though it is super cute you want something that you no will keep going.

    Horse#5 Magnum

Again very old. And i think seeing as you have riden for 6 years you can handle a horse that isnt as easy as a beginner.

I personally think that i would go for prissy! she is my favourite

  20. i like the first one, the second one is an appendix horse, they arent for westerns normaly, they are known to be very spunky and gaited. i dont like the other ones, ones a pony, one looks like a draft mix, or a big build, and the other one is rather leggy.

  21. that second horse is the winner! id go with him if i were you.

  22. most definently the second...hes gorgeous.

but if your going to get a horse based on appearance, then please dont, the reason most horses get sold  and end up in  arbatiors is that they stop being cute.

get one for its personality, appearance should mean almost nothing.

  23. You need to contact the owners and ride each horse. If you like one horse more than the others, ride it again and bring your trainer. If you still like it, I would ride it once more then decide. It's a lot of money buying a horse and you don't base your decision on pictures. If you do that, you could end up with a horse that you can't ride, has terrible health issues, or just is a bad match for you.

    I like the second one though (;

    Congrats on your first horse!

  24. The 3rd horse is small and you would probably grow out of her in a few years. She also looks to be more of an English horse which isn't what you want. The 4th and 5th are too old. I know they might be bombproof and all but they probably only have a few good years left.

The horse I like the best is the 2nd one. He's beautiful, he's a gelding (geldings tend to be calmer), and he's a 'been there done that' type of horse. I think he would be the perfect horse and he would take you far.

Hope this helps and God bless!

  25. Horse #1: Looks like she has a heavy shoulder and large belly. She looks like she'd be heavy on the forehand.

Horse #2:He overall looks good, but there are no good pictures in that ad to judge by.

Horse #3: She appears to have a longer neck and shorter legs. She may also be heavy on the forehand. She is in an english bridle, but the ad says she has done barrel racing, so she may go western too.

Horse #4: He is a stockier horse. His rump does slope quite severely, but that won't affect his abilities for pleasure riding. He looks like he has some draft in him (clydesdale, percheron, etc.). Also older.

Horse #5: Again, no good pictures to judge by. From what is there, she looks very nicely put together. She is older though (21 years) but she does show her age.

#4 and #5 are both 21 years old. That is quite old for a horse and they would be near retirement. They would only be able to handle light riding (unless they are in great shape).

In my opinion, I would pick #2.

    Hope that helps!

  26. Hm. I don't like any of them. The last two are really old. Trust me, you dont want to get a hose and get attached to it just to have it die 3 years later. WHy doing you try looking at horses around 10 or eleven? Normally in that age group they are healthy and still have lots of life left in them, but aren't too young that they are hot tempered. Especially if you arent a beginner, i would considder a younger horse. Also, younger horses still have potential to be taught different things, like reining and barrel racing and roping (not that older horses dont have the potential to learn, its just that if you try to teach it something different than what its been doing all its life, the horse may get confused).

  27. i do not like the last 2, the appy mare and the 21 yr. QH gelding

the appy mare has a long back which would probably turn into a sway back later on

and the QH gelding, looks more like a draft horse cross not QH cross

but the other ones look nice

  28. well, my best votes are for number 2 or number 5.  Number 2 seems like a great horse but may need an experianced handler since he is so sentsitive and was possibly abused as a colt.  Number 5 is amazing in conformation and her information.  She would be the perfect horse for someone to go competer on her, and she could also be that horse that your inexperianced friend would ride.  However, her glitch is her age.  If she really is a great horse, it may be hard to let her go in a few years.  As pretty as number 1 is, I wouldn't go for her because they said she's good at barrel racing AND western pleasure.  every once in a while you will have a horse that will do both for you great.  However, most of the time if you have a barrel horse he's not likely to place in aWestern Pleasure class.  Number 3 is another option but I wasn't wowed about it and I don't know what style of riding you do.  It looks to me that horse is trained for English.   If you do happen to ride English, that may be the best choice for you...althoug 14 hh is pretty small and you may outgrow him in a few years.  I'm not sure about number 4.  No matter which one you pick, you will be lucky because owning a horse is an amazing thing. Well, thats what I got to say.  Good luck and I hope I helped!!

  29. 1 doesn't look like she been used in a while ("the last owner said..."), 2 is for intermediate riders (for a first horse you want a beginner safe horse). 3 "is a good second pony", according to the ad. As in, you should have another horse before her to get the experience for her. 4 and 5 will have to get retired soon. You really could have done a lot better than that! Use horsetopia, go to the advanced search, and search your price range, a beginner-safe (first horse, remember) Western horse. Not that hard. I don't know if horsetopia lets you attach the search results, but I'm going to try it anyway: http://horsetopia.horse-for-sale.org/buy... 9 pages of calm Western Pleasure horses between 10 and 17 and at least 14 hands. Have fun, and remember: no stallions, unbroke, or greenbroke first horses!
