What horses are good for Western riding?

I just sold my Paint gelding because he was primarily an English horse and I want a strictly Western horse. I thought about the Quarter Horse and another Paint but I also want to look at other possibilities. I do cutting,sorting,roping,barrel racing,reining,and working cow horse.I use my friend's Quarter Horse for that. The horse I need would be about 15hh.

Quarter horses and paints and appaloosas are the most common western horses.  It's possible to find a thoroughbred or arabian that can do western but it's not really common.  I've seen a morgan western horse and I've seen some draft breeds go western.

If you're not looking for a particular breed, you could go to a website like equine.com and search for a horse with a western discipline and see what comes up.

Quarter Horses are great at Western equestrian sports,but other horses such as Appaloosa's would be good too.

Quarter Horse is your main guy! I do all those too, and I have a 16hh gelding qh. He's amazing. I've also seen the Buckskin, Appaloosa, Paints, and appendix QH, and just crossbreeds that can do all this.  What you really should focus on, unless you plan on training him/her, is just finding a horse with the training background you are looking for, regardless of the breed! Try equine.com, you can enter your area and the type of discipline you want in a horse!

You also said you like to do trails and the english pleasure, I have a 8 year old Quarter Horse. Along with barreling, roping and cutting, he does trails, and I do show him huntseat....more for equitation but he has won pleasure classes too. I would highly suggest a QH because they are very versatile, but it's really your call and what you feel comfortable on!
