  1. Well, to begin with there is no such thing as a five star hotel. the French star rating system goes only to four stars.

Worse still, the French star rating system is just a checklist of items (like elevators) that are present in the hotel. There's no rating for things like cleanliness or whether the staff is helpful and polite.

Point is, don't be deceived by the stars a hotel may have.

If you want a place with the basic American style hotel amenities then someplace like the Holiday Inn  Paris-République might be for you: http://www.paris-republique.holiday-inn....

Another nice choice would be the Hôtel Luxembourg Parc. their website is here:http://www.luxembourg-paris-hotel.com/in...

P.S. I'll be there in October too. Come on over to Aux Trois Mailletz at 56 rue Galand in the 5th arrondissement some evening. I'll be the crazy old American singing jazz standards.

  2. check some sites like http://www.alphrooms.com/ for prices, locations, availability.  Once you've narrowed it down, check for reviews on http://www.TripAdvisor.com/  You should be able to find a very good centrally located parisian hotel.

By the way, things have improved A LOT in Paris.  Most large hotels will have staff who can transact business in English.  Many of the large businesses and tourist attractions are the same.

  3. You've got some great inputs and suggestions here, and your budget should get you through.

In terms of location, to some extent this is subjective. A lot of folks like to stay somewhere which is rich in character and history, close to all the main attractions, so one of the several locations that I'd recommend would be the Notre Dame - Latin Quarter area.

5 star hotels in Paris are way too expensive [ and quite oppulent ]. Most are over $600 per night with a discount !!

Fouquet's Barriere Hotel - Champs Elysees - Arc de Triomphe EUR 757

Four Seasons Hotel George V  -Champs Elysees - Arc de Triomphe EUR 790

Hotel De Crillon Paris  Champs Elysees - Arc de Triomphe EUR 628

InterContinental Paris-Le Grand Hotel -Madeleine - Opera EUR 366

Marriott Champs Elysees Hotel Paris Champs Elysees - Arc de Triomphe EUR 428

Ritz Hotel - Louvre - Chatelet EUR 690

So best to go for good quality 4 stars here:

But don't take my subjective word for it, do some more research via the official tourism site for Paris here, via one of  the links below and check out this directory of hotels in Paris :

    http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Franc...

    Champs Elysee :http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Franc...

    Louvre - Chatelet :http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Franc...

    ** Notre Dame - Latin Quarter **  :http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/Franc...

etc etc - i hope this helps
