Two adults and three children traveling in Spain and France. We have an apartment in Barcelona, but what about when we travel into France? Is there a reasonable way for a family of 5 to stay in Montpellier or Narbonne?

  1. We're a family of 5 too and I have to warn you that we usually end up having to get two rooms with connecting doors.

Have you looked into Gîtes? They're good for families.

We use Novatel a lot. It's one of the chain hotels that Millie listed. If your children are young, they are especially accomodating.

    hth!

  2. For a stay of several days (if so, how long?) or for a stopover along the highway on your way to Spain?

If you are looking for a vacation place, you should stay at Bed & Breakfasts or rentals, they are cheaper than hotels.

Otherwise this hotel in Lattes, south of Montpellier has ONE family room for up to 6 people: www.halthotel.fr

As long as you are staying at least one mile from the beach, hotels can be very cheap too. I don't know what you call cheap  though, what is your ideal budget?

If it's just for a stopover, stay at one of these cheap but clean and modern motel chains (you'll need to book 2 rooms though, some have a few communicating rooms for families): Etap Hotel, Akena, Hotel Première Classe, B&B Hotel, Bonsai, Nuit d'Hotel, Villages Hotel, etc.
