Question:

What houseplant produces the most oxygen?

I was recently in a greenhouse and was amazed and how fresh and clean the air was. I know that sounds stupid, but it was better than I would have imagined. So now I want to get some houseplants and am wondering if any of you can suggest some that fit the bill. Here's what I'm looking for:

1.) Produces a lot of oxygen compared to other house plants

2.) Relatively easy to maintain

3.) Will not make my house overly humid (requires less water??? maybe???)

I've heard that for the volume it occupies, that bamboo produces the most oxygen of any plant. I don't know if there is any truth to that. Any input?

  1. due to the lack of "brightness" (along with the home not being air tight to hold any oxygen) ,inside homes there will not be enough photosynthesis  to occur to get what you are wanting and the plant will probably make as much carbon dioxide, if not more, than oxygen

  2. English ivy, Chinese evergreen, bamboo palm, snake plant (mother-in-law’s tongue), and several types of dracaena, including marginata, corn plant, and Janet Craig.

EDIT:  As this article explains no plant is going to "poison" your home.  They absorb the bad chemicals in your house and "clean" the air.
