  1. How far and how fast?

For example; A 0.91 HP motor (assume 100% efficiency) can move 50 pounds one foot per second.

  2. It depends on how fast.

1 horsepower is the power required to lift 550 lb 1 foot in 1 second.  If you gear it down to lift the weight in 2 seconds, you would only need 1/2 hp.

  3. It all depends on how *fast* you want to lift the 50 pounds.

If you want to lift it at a rate of 1 foot per second, then you need approximately 0.1 HP.

If you want to lift it at a rate of 10 feet per second, then you need approximately 1 HP (the exact number would be 0.909, but inefficiencies cause you to need more than the perfect physics dictates).
