  1. just use an aquarium gravel vacuum and if you have real plants with a glass tank use a sponge cleaner not from your kitchen or hardware store. for plastic tanks use a magnetic algae cleaner.

  2. Only changed out 15-20% of the water weekly.  I use tap water with water conditioner in it.  I use a vacuum to clean the gravel.  I try to make sure the water is the same temperature before pouring into tank.  I change out my filter pad every 2-3 weeks.  Before placing a new filter I dip it into the old water first.  I try not to do a water change and new filter at the same time.  Testing your water for ammonia, nitrates and nitrites is very important.  I use buckets they are kept just for my aquarium, because some household cleaners can kill fish.   Good Luck

  3. if you are cleaning the aquarium with out water or fish in it, use baking soda, it won't leave nasty chemicals in it. What type of fish and what size aquarium are you using. You have to have bacteria in the water for most fish to survive. If you are starting over, go to petsmart or something like that and ask for some help. They can show you water treatments to put in the water and how to get the tank "cycling" It took my aquarium 6 weeks to cycle before I added my fish. It has been 6 months and no deaths. I have actually had a pair of fish breed twice and now have about 50 baby fishies.

  4. Did you use soap? Soap and detergents can kill fish easily. buy a gravel vacuum, dont worry, they are less than 10 dollars, and clean the fish tank regularly... if you have alot of fish in a smaller tank, clean the tank every two weeks or so, if you have a large tank with very few fish, clean it once every month or if you get a bottom-feeder, you could probably get away with cleaning it less :) good luck!

  5. Do you mean draining it completely out and wiping it with something? Never take any more than 10% of the water out. I have a 20 gallon tank so about every 3 to 4 weeks I take out about 2 gallons and then refill with fresh water. The only chemical that I use is dechlorinater to take the chlorine out of the tap water. I add water to the tank in between cleaning when it evaporates alot. I have found that the longer I don't mess with the tank, the better my fish are. When I first started, I used to take out too much water and clean it about once a week. Every fish I had died. After I stopped messing with it so much, they did better. The fish that I have now, I've had for over a year and they are beautiful. Good luck.
