  1. The Big Bang was no fragmentation grenade.

    First of all, it was no explosion, but a rapid expansion of spacetime. You can't compare it to a chemical or nuclear explosion, which is an expansion of matter.

    Next, if you explode explosives without any solid shell around them, you have also no fragments or shards. You just have a expanding cloud of reaction products and a shock wave ahead of it.

    The 'explosion' was not a conventional one, but it created space and time, along with a lot of energy. The energy eventually turned into matter and the matter is concentrated in areas (galaxies, for example) because of gravity. Gravity is the only fundamental force that governs the interactions of matter over huge distances (as all charges cancel and other forces only apply over small distances).

    If you want to think of "fragments shards etc", then the planets are formed when some of those "fragments shards etc" coalesce into a single object, and that single object will end up being roughly spherical.

    Aside, the big bang is not the only theory out there. A few cosmologists still support the Steady State theory.

  8. According to Einstein, matter cannot be created or destroyed..The same goes for energy.

    They can, however, be changed...  i.e. matter can be changed into energy and vice versa.

    That's how the atomic bomb works.  The matter in the bomb (the Uranium) undergoes a reaction which converts almost all of into energy.

    The old E=Mc2  idea.

    The beginning of the universe (as far as we know because physic laws break down due to the incredible temperatures and pressures thought to exist then) was really just pure energy.  How it got there... well thats still not known.

    But the energy expanded at extremely high temperatures and velocity.

    As it expanded it started to cool and the sub atomic particles were formed from the energy.

    Larger particles were formed as these "clumped" together under the force of gravity (the weak force).

    As gravity did its magic larger and larger particles were formed.

  9. you'd only expect that if you thought something solid exploded. but why would you think that? we know that when the cosmic microwave background radiation was emitted, the universe was plasma (ionised gas), not a solid. formation of stars and planets was not a direct result of the big bang, it came much later under the influence of gravity.

    In fact an infinitely small "thing" known as a singularity suddenly underwent a massive and catastrophic expansion - virtually creating something out of nothing.

    The universe and all the galaxies and planets it contains were created after the big bang - they are not left over bits of an explosion.

You have already got some good answers e.g. from John M and Ms. Minger so I will not repeat them except to write that the big bang was not an explosion of matter, it was an expansion of space filled with energy.  Some of this energy became matter a good while later and a lot later than that, the first stars began to form under the influence of gravity, which is a force that appeared after the big bang.  There were no planets as the elements that form planets, silicon, iron, carbon, oxygen etc did not exist in any quantity until cooked up in the interiors of stars over millions of years.

    The suggestion that the big bang produced shards is typical of the lies promoted by creationist leaders.

From what I understand, and I may be wrong, the Big Bang theory is that an atom became unstable and caused an explosion, creating matter in the process...my question is...if there was nothing there to begin with...where did the atom come from? and why did it suddenly become unstable? to me, the Big Bang is just another stupid theory - it doesn't make sense.

  18. You are on the right track! In an UNGUIDED explosion, there would be random scatter, but since the Big Bang was instigated by the Spirit of God (Let there be Light!) and creation began, all the matter was and is being guided to exactly where God wants it.

    Ken E and others- You simply cannot have gravity without mass.If the energy from the Bang spread in all directions, and became matter later, how did mass originate? You must have at LEAST hydrogen atoms close enough to attract each other, or a Guiding Hand.
