  1. There is som early history. I talked with my Rabbi about this since we live in an old Spanish town. Many spanish places have early links to Judaism. As far as Mexico I have read many misc. things in different times. Search early mexico Judaism it is quite interesting. Also search hispanic-Jewish DNA.

  2. Some more deatils on Jews in Mexico;

    Just a few years after the conquest the first jews arrived to the country.

    Some of them became very influential in the north of the country.

    The best known family was the Carvajal processed by the inquisition in 1580's.

    IN 1640, when Portugal proclaimed their independence from Spain, the spanish goverment in Mexico began a persecution of Potugues citizens in Mexico city. The most notorious family was the Nuñez. They were sentenced to perpetual ban from New Spain and sent to Spain, but when they where going to Veracruz they bribed the guards and scaped. They founded a little town called Venta Vieja located in the present state of Veracruz. Their descendants live there today.

    The other great inmigration was in the 30's with jews from Europe just before WWII broke.

  3. I'm really surprised on the answer of Big Bubba:

    He knows more about jews in México than many mexicans.

    It is true: in Spain just before discovered our continent, the king and queen were catholics and tried to get out muslims and jews. Many jews came to New Spain (later México), and colonize very specific three areas: north east: Nuevo León (where is Monterrey) and Texas (where is San Antonio, remember Texas was part of New Spain), New México (as Texas, it was part of New Spain) and Jalisco (where is Guadalajara, but specific in the region called Los Altos de Jalisco).

    I'm a descendent from those. We are catholic (in times of New Spain if you were jew inquisitors would burn you). In Los Altos de Jalisco (Altos means "highlands") there are many jew traditions, and in some churchs (catholic churchs) there is the David Star (it was a way to remember themselves the jew origin, or maybe to hide the real identity).

    Here is a link to a document about this, done in El Golegio de Jalisco by a historian (although it is in spanish):

  4. When Spain went into the endevour of conquering New Spain, (Mexico) just before that, in Spain, they exiled all of the people from a different religion that was not Catholic; among them all the remains of muslams and a big community of jewish people that didn´t want to convert into catholisism. Some converted their selfs to catholics t o aviod persecusion but pactice judaism in secret. The Spanish Inquisition was all over them so, in order for them to have a more quite life they took the journey to New Spain, and stablished their selfs as far away as they could in the territory,

    Monterrey in the State of New Leon is the third largest City in Mexico and is famous for this convert past, also the city of San Antonio in Tx  U.S.A have some history regarding this.

    The inquisition didn´t stop until they really stop practicing judaism...

    Later on After Mexico became independent and after more than 60 years of wars and political unbalance in the 1870¨s our first Indian president Benito Juarez stablished laws that put a stop to catholics church interest,( that made a lot damage to the country by trying to keep its old colonian privileges) and started sending invitations to different creeds around the world  in order for them to come to Mexico, among them a group of Jews, Mormons and others.  The biggest retail  chain stores of clothes in today´s Mexico date from that era and were owned by jews, ( Palacio de Hierro, Puerto de Liverpool).

    After that  a lot came with the different problems that happen in the Midle East and Europe and after with world war II,

    Today Jewish community live around Mexico city, mostly in the Midle High class and High class neiborhoods of Polanco, Tecamachalco, and Lomas,  and you will find a lot of strores at down town Mex City owned by jewish people, they basic lines of work are the clothing factories  which they owned, commerce of clothes, art and jewerly, leather....

  5. Well here where I live the first people who conquered were Jewish but  we had Spanish conquerors.  And chile relleno is good ;)  jajajja
