  1. Some states have a refund for cans and bottles.  It seems to work pretty well.  Maybe it could be expanded to include more recyclable items.  And waste pick-up companies should never charge extra to pick up recycling.  That just discourages recycling.

  2. Recycling isn't hard.  People don't think about it that much.  It's very simple, you can get recycling cartons the same place people get their trash cans from the city.  Get two, one for plastic/glass and one for paper.

For every person that throws away stuff, it takes a MILE a year in a landfill.  It takes seven trees to make 2 card board boxes. It's not hard at all. People just need to think more about it.

  3. Lead by example.  Recycle at home, at work, wherever people don't think about doing it now.  Talk to others about why it is so important, and why you do it.  Also explain how easy it is, and how it really is no harder than throwing away.

  4. First of all, we consumeers got to start protesting about all this trash we have to bring home from shopping. For example, we can toss the box for the tooth paste, shoes and other items that already have barcode, in the store. If you buy appliances and other card boxed items with delivery, request that seller take card board back. Most stores have cardboard compacters, so they can recycle all card board and paper. That will also send the message to manufacturers to minimize excessive packaging. Make stores, specially supermarkets, "recycle centers". In sweden most supermarkets take back cans and glassbottles and give cash refund.

My friend sells 500 x-mas trees to a big supermarket every year. Customers that buy 75$ worth of groceries get a "free" christmas tree, if they bring it back after x-mas. (Customers get a cash credit next time they shop groceries). All cristmas trees will later be shipped over to the local Bio waste power plant (3 miles away) and become heat and electricity for the community.

I think maunfacturers have to be held rmore responsable for recycling. That will save a lot of resources in the long run.

Cash deposit and cash refund is a great system for recycling. Worked great when I lived in SAC CA. Got very disappointed when I moved to WA state. CA recycle system refund for glass, aluminium, "milk bottle" plastic, PET bottles etc.If you didnt want to do it your self, local kids knocked on your door 2-3 times a week to pick it up. Like that system much better than have to buy cookies for a dollar each to help the kids softball team. It teaches the kid that recycable items are valuble and have to be taken care off. We gotta remember not to take extra trip for recycling, that will increase traffic pollution.

Another important thing is to do as much final sorting as early as possible in the recycling "chain", that means we should separate more at home, than in big recyling centers. We should have at least 5-6 different recycle bins at home, or why not, out larger containers on the local street, sharing with about 10-20 neighbours. Then we can bring it back to the supermarket, or other local recycling centers when we go by next time.

Please take a look at this 4 min. movie clip about recycle paper used in the industry and see so much recycable "garbage" have to go to landfill, because we 'have to" mix all recycling on the curb. Recycle paper from the curb, still contains about 10-20% recycable garbage, when it is "refined" and baled at Waste Mangement, Waste Connections, Smurfit Stone etc.

  5. Make it financially sensible to recycle.    Cans and bottles had a 5c deposit and refund when I was a kid; people hardly ever threw them out.   30 years later I can count over 100 cans along a one mile stretch of road I walk every day.    5c isn't worth the trouble of recycling any more.   Raise the deposit to 20c and people might not toss them out the window any more.      Our town has started to encourage recycling by charging $1.50 per bag of trash.    Not enough for people to dump it in the woods, but enough for some to recycle what they can.

  6. I recycle alot. However, in my town, the waste service keeps sending me letters stating that I have violated the rules. It's for styrofoam, pizza boxes, metal / plastic hangers, etc.

It burns me up that they are being choosy due to profitability. It should be a crime. If the recycle arrows are there, it should be taken. Period.

  7. Tax incentive if they can prove that they are recycling (Public and businesses)

  8. If all Humans don't start taking Responsibility

and recycling their CHANGE    in THOUGHT

they won't have no (Air), we  already are poisioning the

ground with pesticides, and the food is genetically grown

It's time to recycle our thinking .    Sadly      The human mind don't know it's not NORMAL to        Pollute SPACE!

Or haven't they noticed The Earth is rotating and

it's neighbors Are Jupiter and MArs

                   residing neighborly  in              SPACE.

It's 2008 we are the dummies called the Human Race

Aliens say we have                 NO         FAITH

in the CREATOR OF THE SKY, of you and (EYE)

The birds, the Bee's, the Sea

        (Reminder)         the Gifts given           TO

                                                       HUMANITY?

blessed be you "if now"    you see!

we "poor people" luv to GIVE

  9. First, make it easy to do.

Second, educate kids.  They will be the adults in 10 or so years.  Get them in the habit and they will live that way as adults.

  10. let people know there is a recyling group, perhaps by flyer's?put up in store's, librarys, laundromats etc. Many people would rather give it away rather than have to move some thing or leave it behind. This would cause much less land fill and the old saying one man's trash is another man's treasure is probably true.

  11. make it more convenient.  The reason most people don't recycle today is because they don't want to go out of their way to do something.  If it is just as easy to throw a bottle in the recycling as it is the trashcan then why not?

  12. If you want higher participation rates you have to make it easier for people to do it and offer incentives for doing it. Placing more recycling bins out in the streets rather than only garbage cans will encourage people to recycle more. Placing a recyling bin BESIDE a garbage also gives people the choice in whether they want to throw out their pop can or recycle it (being realistic here, if they don't have access to a recycling bin but have access to garbage bin, that can is going to get thrown out, not recycled. Not too many people will hold on to the empty can until they get home so they can recycle it there). Having recycling tax incentives or having people pay for throwing away more than say 1 or 2 garbage bags per week will encourage people to stop throwing their recyclables in the garbage so that they don't have to pay a fee for producing too much waste (this type of system is actually in place in some cities in Ontario).

A side note for the person who said that the city is being picky about what you recycle (telling you not to recycle pizza boxes, etc.), that's not them just going on a recycling power trip, they really can't be used for recycling since there are pieces of food like melted cheese and tomato sauce stuck to the box which makes it more difficult to recycle or even incapable of being recycled in some cases.

  13. make it a money saver.  In my town we pay for garbage cans by the size, but we can have as many recycling bins as we want for no charge.  If in doubt, I put it with recycling and it gets sorted any way, saving space in the garbage can.

  14. MAKE IT A bill, pass out a recycling bin to every house,

if the people don't recycle they get a ticket but if they do recycle and have no tickets what so ever for 1year straight they get some kind of reword

by the  way your right people should recycle.

  15. Economics is always the best influence for people to change behavior.  The best program I have seen is a local town that charges for garbage collection by the bag.  Each bag costs money but it is free to place things in the recycle bin provided.  The incentive is to recycle as much as possible.
