What identification is needed to cross into Mexico and back from the U.S.?

I've read the requirements online, but would really like to know from your personal experiences, as we all know the dmv and what they say you need can be quite troublesome.

I'm traveling on land and am over 18 and a U.S. citizen, reason for pleasure.

You need to get a passport. The law is in effect, but they have been making exceptions due to a backorder of passports.

Birth certificate and drivers license may suffice... for now

birth certificate and id or you are not coming back. i live 5 minutes away  from the border and it happens all the time
