What if I can't pay the minimum on my traffic fines in Texas?

I'm not sure if anyone can help me out here because I think this kind of stuff varies, but to help you out I am paying on fines I received for driving without insurance in Tomball, TX.

I have already went to court and they gave me a 10-day-extension on fines telling me I have to pay a minimum of around $150. The problem is that I lost my job a couple of months ago and am still unemployeed (not for lack of trying). I can pay something before the end of this extension, but I cannot pay the full amount. I have no money.

My question is am I still going to be issued a warrant? I could understand that if I wasn't paying anything at all, but I did not miss my court date and have been paying SOMETHING at least once a month. Can they legally issue a warrant for my arrest - even if i'm paying what I can? Thank you!

  1. Unfortunately a warrant can be issued, but most municipal courts have alternative programs available for people who can't pay.  In San Antonio, people are allowed to perform community service in lieu of paying the fine.  I would bet the court will let you do that.   But another problem can arise--if you get a conviction for the no insurance ticket, your license will be suspended.

  2. No you got to go in there and give them Something each month. If you dont make at least the min. They will just add more fines.
