If you rental agreement doesn't prohibit it....purchase the insurance and have fun!!  :)

If you are somehow refering to a restriction in your rental agreement, I would reconsider doing anything that prohibits use in restricted areas.....many rental cars these days are required by insurance companies to have GPS tracking devices in the vehicles.  Also, I wouldn't want to be the one calling for help from the rental company if something happens in an area I "wasn't supposed to be".

I shouldn't worry about it too much, unless you crash the thing.

I was told that I couldn't take a hire car off the island of Crete, but via ferries, dropped it off in Monaco without problem.

As long as the car is not bent out of shape, they don't seem to care.
