Question:

What if I miss an international flight due to delay in domestic flight?

Hello,

I have booked a flight with JetBlue that reaches JFK at 4.40pm. I have to board an international flight with Air India at 9.30pm from JFK. I will be flying in mid November and the chances of snow related delays are high.

Since my domestic flight is operated by a different carrier and the international flight is a different carrier, what can I do if I miss my international flight from JFK?

Thanks

  1. Since you booked these separately and JetBlue doesn't have an interline agreement with Air India, you're going to be at Air India's mercy when it comes to rescheduling your onward flight.  This is complicated by the fact that you will have to claim luggage at JFK, change terminals, and re-check your luggage when you check in with Air India.  Not trying to scare you, but having dealt with Air India's customer service in the past, missing your flight could be very difficult indeed.

If possible I would check into JetBlue's standby policies and try to get out on an earlier flight.  Normally I would think a 5-hour layover would be no issue, but if, as you mention, there is a weather delay (especially at your origin airport - weather related flight delays at JFK would likely extend across carriers) it could be a very difficult  connection.

This is one of those cases where choosing the cheapest option could end up costing more in the long run.  At the very least, you might want to get travel insurance that covers you in the event of a weather-related issue.

    Good luck!

  2. If you miss your flight they will put you on the next flight that has a vacancy.  Your connecting flight will also attempt to accommodate you.  Just keep in mind that you are at their mercy.

And always practice the saying "You can catch more bees with honey than with vinegar!"
