What if I want to sell my gun?

My ex fiance` bought me a handgun a few years ago for protection. We have since split up. He had me sign an bill of sale he wrote up stating he "sold" the gun to me for $1. He said just to cover his butt if something ever happened with the gun he wouldn't be in trouble. I was living in Kentucky then. I am now living in Texas with my husband we will be moving to Georgia in a few months. I don't want this gun anymore. I'd like to sell it and buy something else. What do I do? Can I just sell it to anybody?

Contrary to popular belief, you are not "liable" for what someone else does with a handgun you sold them.  You can be charged if you sell the gun to someone who you know is a felon or otherwise prohibited from owning the gun.  You can be charged for selling a handgun to a resident of a state other than your own.   You can be charged to selling the handgun to someone who is under the legal age in your state from purchasing a handgun.  There is no Federal age for private transfers.

yeah, just find a friend who wants it and sell it. however because the gun is in your name, if that person ever shoots anyone with it, the gun will trace back to you. When your ex-boyfriend wrote up that bill of sale to cover his own butt, he was putting it all on you.

In Texas?  You bet.  But if you are concerned about who you may be selling it to take it to a gun shop.  Most will buy and sell used firearms.  Whoever they sell the gun to will have to either have a CCW (carry concealed) or submit to a background check.

yes private party firearms sales are legal. You can advertise in the paper or sell it to a pawn shop or sell it to a friend. You might want to do the same thing your ex did though and make sure that theres paperwork that way if its used in a crime you are not liable.

Go to a weapon store. They may buy it from you. or go to polica station show them you own it and would  like to sell it to them.
