What if Nascar and all forms of racing?

What if NASCAR and all forms of racing was asked to stop doing so, in turn the price of gas would fall back $2.50 from where it is now, across America? We are in very hard times, and between all the big rigs, RV's, High compression engines in the cars running almost 365 days a year. Tell me would it be worth it to you? Or are you willing to pay $6 a gallon by next year?

  1. advertisers would never have that.

  2. Nationwide, like you said , there aren't that many jobs in NASCAR  or cars and trucks . So it would have no effect on the price of gasoline or diesel

  3. Paul S has a point, but you are forgetting one important fact.  Coal is a fossil fuel, and well over 75% of all electricity in the world is generated by coal-fired power plants.  Others (approximately 10%) are run using turbines, using...guess what.....jet fuel/kerosene.  The "so-called" clean power generators (nuclear, solar, wind turbines, and hydroelectric) compromise less than 15% of the total power generated.  There goes your theory on saving fossil fuels.

Also, why is it that you can not seem to accept the fact that racing has no, nada, nil, zilch, zero effect on the world's gasoline/fuel consumption.  All of the fuel used in an entire season of NASCAR, F-1, IRL and/or every other major racing series does not equal the amount of fuel consumed in a single day in a large metropolitan city...ie..Chicago, LA, New York, Miami, St. Louis, or even Seattle.  It's been proven and published by an independent panel as a fact, not just propaganda for the"greenies" to chew on.

  4. To stop racing would do nothing to affect gas prices, especiallly since most forms of racing are using alternative fuels.  If you look at global gas prices they are up and down all across the board... From .80 cents to $8.00.

The only reason gas prices are the way they are in the U.S. is because someone in the government is making big bucks lobbying... along with the oil companies.  This has nothing to do with how much is being used at all.  They are making about a 300% profit, which is rediculous.

My father said back in the 70's everyone refused to buy gas when it got too high (over a dollar I would assume), even the truck drivers transporting goods, the next week the prices were back to normal...

  5. Racing will not stop because of advancing technology, alternative fuels like alcohol, bio, etc. Think about what your saying.

  6. This has been asked repeatedly. Racing has nothing to do with fuel prices. It's estimated that racing uses .00133% of all the fuel used in the U.S. in one year.

43 cars running 500 miles @5 MPG for Nascar and using an average of 25 MPG for the public, It would take 18.6 seasons for the Sprint Cup series to use the same amount of fuel that's burned up in St. Louis Mo. in ONE DAY! St. Louis drivers combined travel 72,000,000 million miles PER DAY! That means that every 2 minutes and 9 seconds the same amount of fuel is burned in one city that is burned on a Sunday in Sprint Cup.

Here's my source for the 72,000,000. It's about halfway down the page. It's the 5th bullet point under the heading 'Emission Testing and Clean Air'

No wool over anybody's eye's. Just the facts.

St. Louis is the 13th largest city in the U.S.

If you want to throw in ALL forms of racing, testing, qualifying etc. etc. then don't forget to throw in every major city too!

  7. If racing were to cease it would add to the Economic Woes of the country, due to the Layoffs of racing personel---Drivers-Crew Members-Shop Personnel in all the race shops. But I will Refuse to Pay 6.00 a Gallon. I can still ride a Bike!!!!!!!

  8. Interesting thought... but not realistic.  If you stopped all forms of racing, what you would see is, instead of $4.00/gallon, a dramatic decrease to... oh, maybe $3.99?  Or let's go ahead and be wild and say $3.98!!!  And I bet, if that sudden decrease in demand came, the oil companies would just pass along that one or two cent savings to the consumer too?  Or more realistically, in order to make up for the lost sales they would probably bump the price a couple cents?

If you took all of the racing in the world at all levels over a whole weekend, you are likely looking at the same amount of fuel used that would be used for one or two transatlantic flights.  So, the fuel cost savings you, the consumer could expect to see, would be pretty much the same you see every time one of the airlines in the world has to cancel a flight (ie, none).

But, it goes further... while the fuel use in racing can seem a lot (2-3mpg can be very high fuel economy for some forms of racing), the fact is, it is a very small group using it, and the total amount is very small.  And then consider the fact that most of our largest advances in fuel economy in the last 30 years have all started in racing, as well as many of the key technologies for fuel development have come here!  Some may have developed on their own over time, but most would have never gotten off the ground.

So no, it would not be worth it to me.  And if gas hits $6 a gallon, it will be because oil companies have decided people in the US are willing to pay that much (since prices like that are already common elsewhere in the world)... but it's not likely we'll see prices in that range by next year.  We will toy up and down around $4 for awhile until the buying public accepts that as "the price," at which time it will slowly march towards $5/gallon, and then repeat the up and down around that until people accept $5... and then, and only then, will things move towards $6!  Definitely not by next year.

  9. The IRL (Indy Racing League) is using ethanol and not gasoline.  The amount of gasoline used in racing is a drop in the bucket and wouldn't affect prices at all.

  10. would people deal yes it would not kill people to see it end. would it help gas prices no so if you want to ask a question be a little more realistic. NO RACING WOULD NOT EFFECT GAS PRICES

  11. okay first of all auto racing will never stop cuse of all these local tracks there like billons of little short tracks around the u.s. so there ant no stoping local racing. and as of nascar they ant using thaty much gas or should i say not enough to cause gas prices to go up cuse all pro racing uses ethinol or alcholl so think about what you are saying.
