  1. I used to work for the sell side of the market. Typically, when a client wants to buy or sell a certain stock, we are given a target price--what price they are willing to buy or sell and how many.

Look at it this way. Let's say we are to sell x million shares at $10. The price of the stock at the moment is $18. We will sell as much as we can as long as the price is above $10. If price is closing in at $10, we hold off selling, and let the price go up.

Other market participants will think that support at $10 level is valid and start buying. While they are buying, we start selling again, but in small sizes so as not to scare these bulls. If these bulls keep buying up the price of the stock, we are selling--at market or limit sell.

This is why sometimes, you will see a stock's price moving sideways? This is what's happening.

    Hope this helps.
