Will the passenger die? For ex. in a bus? in a sedan? in an SUV? What will happen?!

I was imagining this because when I was in a bus, it was raining hard. There were flashes of lightning and it is scary. I had this thought for quite some time now. What will happen if it hits us? The vehicle that I was in? Are cars lightning proof? What cars are lightning proof? Overall this is about vehicles and lightning -- its protection against it maybe? Thanks.thanks

  1. Although the vehicle may suffer some damage,   particularly to electronic parts,  you should not be affected.   Your vehicle will conduct the charge around you.

Just as a bird or squrrel can run or sit on a power line without harm,  you are not completing the circuit sitting in a car.    BUT  NEVER GET OUT OF A CAR IMMEDIATELY AFTER A LIGHTNING STRIKE OR IF THERE ARE POWER LINES LAYING ACROSS THE VEHICLE.     Your body will complete the circuit as the car is insulated from the ground by the tires.

  2. No, the tires help from proventing it happening too

  4. no

  5. There are a lot of factors involved in a valid answer. Is the car metal or fiberglass? Wet or dry?

In most cases, in a metal vehicle the charge is conducted over the car's surface, turning it into a Faraday cage, safe for occupants who do not contact the outside. (Hands in lap, roll up the windows.)

There's an excellent, understandable page about this here:
