What if international trade ended today?

If we no longer had international trade what would the United States have to do without? We purchase many things from other countries but is there any product we could not manufacture ourselves? Something this country would be in dire straights over.

  1. Well, certainly the world would not be swamped with cheap clatter from the east, every region would be compelled to be self sufficient.War could spark due to the shortage of oil, and other minerals.

  2. Things would be fine.

    1) Laws prevent some manufacturing processes.

    2) CEOs make more money when they have proxy access to slave labor.

    3) Given laws were removed, and CEOs could not use slave labor, we could adjust to manufacture ANYTHING here in America with minimal price impact due to supply and demand.

International trade is great, but not REQUIRED. If some imported product was cut off, you better believe we would accommodate the demand quickly, and 100% locally.

  3. Well the US economy would be in a downfall and we would collapse. Unless we learned to manufacture all the goods that we get from other countries, here in the US. That would make us more economically stronger and have a stronger infastructure

  4. The US has the capacity to produce 99% of things domestically - but things would get a lot more expensive.

  5. well this would surely get America's attention of why so many of the American companies do trade overseas

  6. Less minerals from Africa like platinum, diamonds, possibly uranium. This would be no bad thing.

The computer parts and oil to send ships to trade could be made use of less to not use up resources to fast and reduce Global Warming. Solar Power Socialism. Set up system in which people pay The Government to maintain The Food stores and have local farmers supply the stores with their own crops . The same elsewhere. Less plastic for toys .Down to esentials. Consume less have to anyway or will run out of materials.

  7. WalMarts - almost all the c**p they sell is from China.

  8. this depends.  would that end our trading american jobs away to illegal mexicans and overseas indians?

as far as a product we could not manufacture ourselves, we're doing a d**n fine job of producing mexicans right here within our border anyway.

  9. I like the idea of international the united states will never be able to create good items in the electronic department. Look at the radios and tv's the united states produce had a couple and it did not turn out well was lucky if they lasted one year.

  10. the economy of the entire world would go straight to the toilet

every single nation depends on on other nations for goods and services

many people would starve because their home nations are not able to produce enough food to feed themselves and they are forced to buy food from other countries

  11. Maybe when we purchased something/anything, it would last more than a month!!!!  Imagine a world like that.

  12. Do you want to start with coffee and chocolate? How about copper wiring for homes? Steel - since the US steel industry is gone.  We haven't built a refinery in almost 30 years so park you cars, California, and get ready to freeze in the dark, New England. Where is most of the country going to get their produce through the winter if we don't have the Caribbean, Central and South America?

The Democrats think this is all about Wal-Mart, Chinese goods, and some manufacturing jobs, but we import a lot of raw materials that keep American industry going, including the small and medium sized companies for which the majority of Americans work.

They should tell the truth - if they know it! - and stop demagoging this issue to their uneducated followers.

  13. Worse case senario...you'd have no gas to get to work;  you'd freeze your azz off from no fuel oil and they'd be no more bananas for your cereal or coffee to keep you going.  The rest is as the others have stated above.  I, for one would not like that.  You?

  14. prices for manufactured goods in usa would increase a great deal for nobody in usa would work for low wages. buying oil from other counties maybe a issue.
