  1. The decision to call these things by the names we have is how we invented language. The question on my mind is: would we still be speaking English?

There have been theories advanced that say that changes in language could have an effect on the way we perceive things. To me, the language itself isn't as important as the connecting concepts.

    Interesting question!

  2. Objects do have different names if you study a different language. To address the point you brought up, try confusing people by calling something by another name in the same language and you will be making a hasty trip to the mental ward.

  3. OMG that is such a pet peeve of mine.

But i don't think history would be different it would just have different names and if for ex: a pen was called a pencil, we would be wondering why it doesn't have a different name.

    It's a vicious circle. lol

  4. In fact, they do have different names. For example, in the US a diaper is a piece of absorbent material used to contain the excretions of infants. However, in England, the very same piece of absorbent material is called a nappy. An apaprtment is a flat in England, potato chips are crisps, bathrooms are water closets (restrooms).

History is no different because of the difference in names.

  5. History would not be different. Only the names would be changed to protect the innocent.
