What if the debt is way over the current value of the property

my father just passed away and both he and my mother owe a lot more on the mortgage. the value of the property has gone way down and the mortgage payment has doubled. I'm not a home owner and i'm clueless as to what to do. will my mother be homeless?

FHA has new loan program to try to prevent foreclosures. She should look into that.  She may need co-signer, help with payments.
