What if the universe was never created, but has existed for an infinity of time which past and present does not exist?

  1. Hmm..this is a very complex question. Sounds like a great sentence opening to a novel. Hey, i'd read it!

Our understandings tell us that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, but many theories and ideas have been proven wrong in the past. Energy is a lot different than the universe itself. If you and I assume that the universe is infinitely large, and that matter cannot be destroyed or created, then the universe being 'destroyed' would really be collapsing back into an extremely dense and hot mass. The universe also constitutes all of space and time, and time as a concept will always be around, EVEN if people are not there to observe it. Right now we believe that the universe is expanding. Everything that goes up must come down (so we think) so at some point the universe will inevitably shrink. BUT of course, there are also theories of multiple universes. So, whose to say. Keep in mind, the universe- like i said earlier, is expanding.

  2. That would be a little easier to understand, since so far it has been impossible to explain how matter, energy and ESPECIALLY time were created in a nanosecond. Yet while this stands, all evidence points to the fact that the universe is expanding, and it will continue to do that until whatever force that might have created the universe is overpowered by gravity, and all matter will go back to being a tiny dot.

  3. if you think about it

it would mean we don't exist

    and if we don't exist

    then nothing exist....

and so there would be no time no earth no nothing...forever!!

  4. I was brought up thinking that way, but we have scientific evidence that contradicts that notion.

  5. Science contradicts that notion.  We can see the complexity of the humans and the design that it took to make us.  It would be the same as compared to you seeing a computer.  You would understand that the computer had a creator, and it had design, and that it is not Random but quite the opposite, that it has a purpose.  We see this same kind of design in all the things around us.

  6. People once thought that.

But if the universe was infinately old then the night sky would be as bright as the daytime sky because there would be an infinate number of light rays coming from an infinate number of old stars. And this obviously is not so.

And, much evidence shows us that the universe is expanding, so if it's expanding then it must have been smaller in the past, all the way down to size zero, at least that is the current thinking.

And next, there is enough background noise in the form of radiation left over from the first instant of the universe. Its something like the noise left over from an explosion and apparently points to a "starting time" for the universe.

And finally, the equations that we today acknowledge as modeling the universe (Einsteins general relativity) demand either an expanding or contracting universe, but not a steady state universe (unless something could be found to balance the expansion).

The universe seems to be a dynamic system, not a steady state infinium. The measured age of the universe seems to be about 14 billion years old.
